Below lists the events on three of the many evenings we had patrolling on Arriva buses.
Operation Varney
Evening 1
19:30
Male aged 19 yrs smoking cannabis reefer cigarette onboard bus. No police available, offence pointed out by plain
clothes Crime Management Services (CMS) operatives and requested to leave the bus.
22:35
Two young females boarded the bus and lit cigarettes, they were told to stop by plain clothes CMS operatives and leave the
bus, they complied with the officers.
23:15
Female 16 yrs observed onboard bus with a bag of skunk cannabis, plain clothes police operating in company of CMS
operatives also in plain clothes. She was taken off the bus and dealt with by police by the way of immediate street caution for
unlawful possession of a controlled (Class C) drug.
Evening 2
20:55
14 to 16 youths at a bus stop annoying elderly customers waiting outside the bus shelter. Plain clothes CMS operatives told the
youths to move on, the youths shouted abuse at the officers. Youths stopped by police, names taken and youths moved on.
Positive feedback from Arriva customers regarding action taken as the elderly customers felt intimidated by the youths.
22:00 Drunken male onboard bus being abusive. Spoken to by CMS operatives, he refused to
quieten-down, his alcohol was taken from him and was asked to leave the bus, he complied.
Again customers gave us positive feedback.
23:30
Five youths in a bus shelter smoking cannabis being rowdy and shouting abuse at each other with three elderly customers standing
in the rain. Police assistance requested. Youths kept in bus shelter until police arrived, when they were searched by police and
moved on.
CMS operatives waited at the bus stop with the elderly customers until a their bus arrived. They were extremely gratified by
this.
Evening 3
18:30
Male smoking at rear of the bus, told to extinguish cigarette by CMS operative. He complied.
19:00
Male smoking cannabis at rear of the bus, told to extinguish cigarette by CMS operative. He complied.
19:05
Two young males throwing stones at bus, identified and stopped by CMS operatives. Parents spoken to by CMS, police now dealing
with case.
19:07
Seven to eight youths throwing stones at passing bus, CMS gave chase but youths got away.
19:19
Two girls at the rear of the bus playing loud music and singing, when asked to stop by CMS the first refused but complied when
asked a second time.
19:23
Male and female boarded the bus, they were abusive and violent to each other. They appeared to be under the influence of both
alcohol and drugs. They were asked to leave the bus and were cautioned. CMS remained with the couple who were allowed on the
next bus accompanied by CMS to their destination.
19:45
Male smoking at rear of the bus, told to extinguish cigarette by CMS operative. He complied.
22:30
Two drunken females boarded the bus, both lit cigarettes and were told to extinguish. They were very abusive and aggressive and
were warned if they did not comply they would be removed from the bus. They complied and quietened-down.
