Safety first as crime-busters move in.

FOR many students, fear of crime can make life a misery. A good number will have left home for a strange city and will be making new friends. Some are simply unaware of danger in big cities.

One Liverpool firm, though, is working hard to make college crime a thing of the past. Crime Management Services is determined to change the image of security firms.

“Some companies gained the sector a bad name,” said Peter Quinlivan, senior security consultant.

“It had a sleazy reputation, but things have changed recently. That's because the people who work for us are highly trained in all the necessary skills: First aid, fire-fighting and evacuation skills. That's what our clients want, a company they can trust as well as employees who have the skills they need.”

Crime Management today employs 70 people, though five years ago there were 260 on their books.

“That's when we supplied building sites,” said Mr Quinlivan. “But we knew we had to change and we formed a limited company 18 months or so ago. We took all the staff we knew could get qualifications and who wanted a career in the company. And we have made our greatest investment in training.”

That move is clearly paying off as they have agreed a major new contract with Liverpool Community College, one of the biggest such institutions in the country, with 25,000 students.

“We were looking for a company which could offer a total package with scope to move forward,” said Peter Hornby, Facilities Manager for the college's corporate services division.

“We will also be assisting in further health and safety training for crime management staff in a committed development of our partnership.”

Security staff are on hand round the clock and CCTV monitoring has recently been introduced at the college.
